How Vapes Stole the Show

Vaporizers—better known as ‘vapes’—are a product that have been on the market since the early 2000’s. While first these devices were constrained to cartridges and ‘juices’ suspended with nicotine, the cannabis market quickly caught on. Today, we have behemoths like STIIIZY and PLUGplay that have built their entire brand around vaporizing concentrated cannabis oils, but there’s no shortage of options. Many of the same reputable growers who produce the flower that you’re used to packing in your bowl also produce high-quality, lab-tested cannabis oils. And with myriad benefits, from high-potency to convenience, it’s no wonder why more and more users are converting to vape products in today’s recreational cannabis climate.

What’s all the fuss about?

It might not be immediately obvious why folks would bother with vapes, especially when people have been smoking from joints, bongs, blunts, pipes, bubblers and bongs (and whatever else appears to work) for ages now. But there are a few key aspects about smoking cannabis that can make it less convenient, especially for people who have never dabbled much in the cannabis world before and aren’t overly familiar with the standard range of cannabis-smoking-implements.

If you’re new to the THC scene, investing in glass—not to mention figuring out how to pack the right sized bowl and hit your pipe or bong without totally scorching your throat and lungs—can be intimidating to say in the least. And on account of those beginners who thought, ‘why not just start by rolling myself a joint?’ I’ll give a nod to the literal thousands of online videos dedicated to educating others on joint-rolling technique. Suffice to say, there tends to be a bit of a learning curve there that is only surmounted with plenty of practice.

That said, vaping is actually much more similar to dabbing and arrived on the scene as something of an answer to the dab rig’s notorious inconvenience. Read on to learn all the ways that vaping cannabis has improved on the original method!

  • Cost Efficiency
You can’t discuss the benefits of vapes without starting at their price points. And while prices vary greatly across brands, suffice to say that at ASHE you can get a full gram of 85%+ THC oil for as little as $12.99, like Zips King Louis OG 1g (86.8% THC). Generally, you’ll see most oils priced around $20-$30 for a half gram and $40-$50 for a full, but there are super-premium, ultra-filtered, wickedly potent formulas that you can find in higher price brackets as well.

The efficiency comes into play when you factor in the potency of each puff and how many puffs you’ll get before your product is depleted. At a general average of 80-90% THC, most 1g vape carts will give you 400-600 puffs, but depending on how long you hit your pen each time, you may milk out as many as 1,000 puffs from a cartridge.

By comparison, some of the most potent flowers will reach levels within the mid to high 30% range, and at 3.5g will likely yield between 7 and 14 bowls (or about 3 joints, or 1-2 blunts). Prices for flower in this range typically start around $40 and go up, so when you consider that you’ll likely only get 5-8 puffs from a given bowl, you will quickly realize that you’re paying $40+ for an eighth of product that is going to yield less than 100 puffs (about 56-70 puffs based on these figures) at less than half the potency of vape oil.

  • Convenience
If someone wasn’t convinced by the price point alone, the convenience of vaping might be enough to win them over. One of the best aspects about vapes is the reduction or total absence of cannabis scent while using them. Plus, because you are vaporizing a product rather than combusting it, there’s no extra mess. No gunky resin to clean out of your piece, no ash to be disposed of (or cling to your clothes), and no smoke depositing microparticles on the skin and nearby surfaces.

What does this mean? Well for one, you can vape indoors without ruining the furniture, rug or paint. Scents won’t cling to your clothes or your surroundings when you vape, making them a discreet option, especially for those in close living quarters—like those with roommates, or just those with shared walls, or closeby neighbors—or for when you’re out and about in public.

And finally, for anyone who’s ever had to lug a bong bag and a jug of water to take their glass on a day-trip, a vacation, or just a smoke sesh at a friend’s, the portability of vapes is king. They’re often pocket-sized and reputable products rarely leak, meaning you can grab them and go without a second thought. There’s no setup, as long as you’re charged up, then you’re good to go—so you can pull out your pen for a quick puff whenever without the hassle of setting up your entire rig.

Besides that, there’s no regular cleaning to be done and you won’t have to live with the fear that someone (possibly yourself) is going to break your beloved glass piece in a moment of distraction or clumsiness. Vape batteries are generally quite inexpensive, but if you want to skip the investment altogether, buy a disposable vape and toss the whole kit once you’ve puffed the last of the delicious oil.

  • User-Friendliness
A factor that ties in with their convenience, vapes are a very user friendly product. They require zero or very minimal setup (like charging your pen or plugging in your cart), and they’re very intuitive to use. Some pens have a button you press to vaporize the product, but many are automatic—just place your lips on the mouthpiece and inhale.

These products are great for beginners because their effects are easily modulated. A user will get a roughly consistent amount of THC per second that they puff, so one can choose to start with a small puff for weaker effects, or pull a good long one for a strong buzz. Conversely, when smoking flowers and concentrates the THC is not evenly distributed throughout the product, so one hit could be small but strong due to high THC concentration, while a large hit might yield less of an effect than was expected due to poor THC distribution.

However, smoking and vaping are similar in the sense that their effects peak and wear off relatively quickly (unlike edibles, for example). This means you can either build up the strength and duration of the effects by vaping more, or if you’re feeling a little too buzzed, you can simply take a puff break and you’ll feel more comfortable quickly—usually within 15 minutes to 1 hour.
